How to Lay Synthetic Turf

How to lay synthetic sports turf is becoming a popular question nowadays. this is as the governments and sports managers across the world are turning to artificial grass. Unlike natural grass where you have to look for the good species, plant, be watering and weeding for a season or two before it is ready, sports turf is different. You just need to prepare the chosen ground, buy the right size and quality of the turf as per plan and purpose, and then lay it. This is a simple process and it does not consume a lot of time. In this post, we elaborate step by step process of laying synthetic sports turf.

1.Measure Your Field

Before you lay sythetic sports turf, you want to make sure you have grass that will cover the whole field. Measuring your field is a crucial step because if you take wrong measurements it will cost you a lot, you buy the required size. Take correct measurements in square meters and double-check to be sure of the same. It is advisable to allow extra length to allow end trimming where it will be necessary. People have different methods of taking measurements. Some use the measuring tape directly, others use the string which they mark and send to the turf shops.

2.Order Your Synthetic Turf

Place the order as per your measurements, that is length and width. It is advisable to make a call instead of sending emails or messages to the seller. Issues that may arise about the same are ironed out in the phone conversation. Do not forget to include the special tools which are required to lay the turf when making the order.

3.Remove the Top Soil and Vegetation

Clear any vegetation or grass in the area you want to lay your turf. You can use herbicides so that the weeds can die completely up to the roots. Remove hummus and topsoil to a depth of about 3.5 to 4.5 inches. This will create an allowance for laying the sports turf. If the field is not big you can use the spades to dig and remove the soil. However, for big fields like a soccer pitch, one is should hire machinery to do the same.

4.Plan the Drainage and Install the Border Before you Lay Synthetic Sports Turf

A proper drainage plan should only be installed in the soil at your area has poor drainage characteristic. Sandy soil areas drain well and do not need to be installed with the same. Build a concrete curb along the perimeter to prevent the aggregate and sand from spread out of the field. It acts as a barrier. It should be done in a way that it will be on the level with the sports turf.

5.Spread Aggregate and Sand

Hire machinery to spread aggregate to the level and compact. After aggregate, the sand should be spread filling all the small spaces seen between it. The sand layer should be enough to cover the aggregate and be above it by an inch even after leveling and compacting. You don’t have to hire the machinery if you are working in a small field. A rake is enough to spread aggregate and sand to the required level.

6.Spread the Synthetic Turf

Carefully lay the artificial turf over the area you have prepared. Depending on the size of the turf, this should be done with the help of other person/s. When laying the turf make sure that the base prepared earlier, that is aggregate and soil is not affected, it should remain intact to maintain the level. To look smart and natural, make sure that the artificial grass blades face one direction.

Conclusion

Preparation of the base for laying your synthetic sports turf determines how long it will last, its appearance, and its effectiveness. Many people do ignore some of the processes but they are all crucial although they may not be compulsory.
